Media Art -Final Year Project 2 :Critique 2 : Video Test on the Installation

This is a short video of the project

Media Art -Final Year Project 2 :Critique 2 - Software ( steps-PART 2)

This is the steps where I will configure the Ablenton live 8 software on my pc to make sure that my Iphone will fully function on this software

1-  on the Ablenton software I have to go to the preference and at the  MIDI sync tab
I have to setup the  control surface as : Mackie Control ( this is the codec to connect with the iphone)
input 1 and output 1: to amzaru  ( which is the host name of my pc that just now i create on rtpMIDI )

The i have to combine all the output  soundscape  that i had made before and put in the ablention on each channel audio

After finish all the editing in Ablenton live 8  , I can now mixing the noise pollution soundscape by using the Iphone

Media Art -Final Year Project 2 :Critique 2 - Software ( steps-PART 1)

This is the step to get connect with the project installation

By using the rtpMIDI software on PC I have to add the  section on
the left side this is where the PC wireless will connect to the iphone

After that I have to create a Hoc network connection to get
connect to my Iphone later on

After finish the Hoc connection I have to find the "A' wireless
on my Iphone and get connected.

Then I have to open the AC-7 core mini apps on the
Iphone to detect the connection on rtpMIDI on pc

Then I have to open back the rtpMIDI on pc and this what will I do:
1-  the Iphone will detect on the  directory and click the Iphone host name and click connect
2-  In the participant box the Iphone just now I connect are now able to connect to the PC

Media Art -Final Year Project 2 :Critique 2 - Software

The software that I will use for this final project is

Ablenton  Live 8

This is where I input my  noise pollution sound scape

Ac-7 core mini (apps on Iphone)
This is a apps that I control my iphone as a mixer

rtpMIDI (pc)
This is a software that I have to bypass the iphone and my pc together

 Adobe soundBooth

Adobe Premiere Pro

This is a software that I develop the interface of soundscape editing video and all the iutput

Media Art -Final Year Project 2 : Problem Solution

After few week I found a solution which I can  use Iphone (as I already have the phone) as my mini mixer which will replace the original mixer that I want to use before. I only have to download the apps through Appstore and Its only cost me around RM20.

Application Detail :

 Ac-7 core mini

  • This application cost  around RM20
  • it have 8 channel (more than my expectations
  • The AC-7 Core Mini is a wireless touch control surface

Media Art -Final Year Project 2 : Problem finding

A few week after of Critique 1. There are few Problem that I can not be prevented for this project.

  1. The mini mixer is kind of expensive survey all around KL and Selangor range price around RM450-RM1000++( more channel stereo more expensive)
  2. To connect to The Mini Mixer I have to Buy the Power Amp which is the most cheaper price cost around RM800.

So as a conclusion  the bigger problem here is that I cannot  afford to buy this equipment .

Final presentation & submission : A3 poster

This is the poster artwork related to noise pollution

Artist Statement

Noise pollution is unwanted or harmful sound that intrudes upon human or other faunal activity. Noise pollution is almost entirely human generated, whether by machine sources or amplified sound of human creation.

Noise pollution in urban city is an installation project to make the user realize how noisy we are living surrounding the urban areas. This project is about soundscape, which user can control and mix the noise pollution sound using the mixer and while user
changing the noise sounds the visual will appear from the projection screen.

There will be eight different of soundscape that come from the main source of noise pollution such as the vehicle building construction, road construction, noise from the factory, entertainment place and noise from the neighbor.

  2. user will come in to the space .no sound and visual will appear at the begining.
  3. user have to control the mixer to play with the sound scape (noise pollution) .user can mix up the  noise more than one sound.

Critique 3-Idea Development - software testing

this is the few software that i had test

Adobe SoundBooth

testing to combination a multiple sound and cutting the unwanted sound

testing on reducing the noise background so that what I record will be more clear.

testing the Premiere Pro to speed up the duration and combine the audio as well.

Critique 3-Idea Development - software and hardwaretutorial

this is the software that I will use to create my project.
  •  Adobe Soundbooth - editing/cut/merge sound
  • Adobe Premiere Pro- editing video
  • Adobe After Effect- editing video
  • Adobe Photoshop- Editing still photo

Critique 3-Idea Development - Raw data

this is the original  audio and video after collect from many place regarding noise pollution

Critique 3-Idea Development - Plan

In Critique 3 , I have decided to create idea base on my title which is Noise Pollution in Urban City.In this section all data collection that i have will be uploaded here.

I have two idea for my idea development. which is one is the installation and the other one is a video of sound scape.

Idea 1 Project title : Installation Noise Pollution in Urban City

  • for installation I'm thinking to collect  a few sound scape of noise around  the urban city such as the vehicle (car, motorbike,Lory, aircraft, etc) ,construction ,load music form the entertainment place, factory noise and so on.
  • After sound collect,Separating the sounds into separate components  using the mixer
  • There will be 8 different ambient sounds that will allow ,Users  can   `mix' these ambient sounds with others.

Idea 2 Project title : A sound scape video about noise pollution around urban city
  •  Noise from the selected location will be record.
  • Video will be record as well
  • Combination of two method and produce a  sound scape with audio video ,about noise pollution in urban city

Method of Research:Audio Recording

This is the random sound that I have record in Bukit Bintang

Method of Research : Survey Question

For my project. I have provide some question which is  survey questionnaire to the public mostly  in urban areas. For this  survey  I focusing on three places which is
  • Bukit Bintang
  • Bangsar
  • Along Federal highway

This is an example of survey question that I had done.

  • What are the causes of noise pollution?
  • What are the effects of noise pollution on people's health, in general?
  • What are the effects of noise pollution on the children's health?
  • What are the effects of noise pollution on the environment?
  • How can we reduce the noise pollution?
  • What are the precautions we can take to avoid noise pollution?
to  view the question(PDF online view) I have upload to this website. click here

The effect from the noise pollution

The effects

Noise has direct physiological effects to human  such as hearing damage which can be including hearing loss and tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, as well as   cardiovascular and hormonal disturbances. Indirect effects include sleep loss, interference with concentration and learning, mood changes and aggression, and social isolation.
Noise pollution is also becoming huge problem for many animals. Their hearing for detecting predators, finding mates, establishing territory, and recognizing warning alerts. Unnaturally high levels of noise can damage their hearing and can also mask more subtle sounds that they need to hear in order to survive and reproduce. They may also react with a fight-or-flight response to artificial sounds such as aircraft noise, thereby using up valuable energy reserves to flee from a non-existent predator. If noise in urban area becomes too intrusive, animals may shift to a new territory or alter their migration patterns, which can create new complications for their mating and survival.
Noise Pollution effects the environment. As we all known that plants are similar to human being. They are also as sensitive as man. There should be cool and peaceful environment for their better growth. Noise pollution causes poor quality of crops in a pleasant atmosphere.

The Chosen Topic :Noise Pollution in urban city

Definition of noise pollution

The definition of noise pollution is can be elaborate as a type of energy pollution in which  distracting, irritating, or damaging sounds are freely audible. Noise pollution contaminants are not physical particles, but rather waves that interfere with naturally-occurring waves of a similar type in the same environment. Sounds are considered noise pollution if they adversely affect wildlife, human activity, or are capable of damaging physical structures on a regular, repeating basis. In the broadest sense of the term, a sound may be considered noise pollution if it disturbs any natural process or causes human harm, even if the sound does not occur on a regular basis.

Measurement for sound

Sound is transmitted in series through the air with the wave compressed. When it comes to sound, there are three terms that can connected with it, the strength, pitch or frequency. Strength calculated in units of decibels (dB). Decibel is a ratio expressed on a logarithmic scale. This logarithmic scale takes care of wide range of sound power, intensity and pressure. The decibel (dB) scale begins from zero, which represents the faintest sound, which is audible to a normal ear. Decibel (dB) is used in environmental noise pollution as a measure of sound power level, sound intensity level and sound pressure level. A decibel is a physical unit based on the weakest sound that can be detected by the human ear. It is named after Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. Our human ear sensitivity to noise in the range of 20 to 20,000.

Sources of noise pollution

People living in urban city  complained about the noise from automobile traffic, overhead airplanes and helicopters, leaf blowers, pneumatic drills, and neighbors who play their televisions and stereos much too loudly. Large urban areas are being inundated by unwanted sounds. These sounds or noises are disturbing, disrupting ongoing activities and peaceful interludes. One cannot concentrate on a work project if there is constant drilling at a nearby construction site. It is virtually impossible to enjoy a television program when overhead jets frequently drown out its sound. It is difficult to fall asleep if your upstairs neighbor's stereo system is blasting away.
There are many sources of noise pollution that created in urban areas. The sources in general may be stationary or mobile. The example of stationary sources is such as when use of loudspeakers on various occasions like festivals, elections, worships in temples, mosques and during advertisements, mining operations, use of bulldozers, drillers and dynamites to break rocks, household gadgets like vacuum cleaner, TV, radio, stereo, grinder, mixer. In the other hand, mobile sources can be classified in Transportation / Traffic noise (Road Traffic or Highway Noise), Industrial noise, Noise from construction work and also Neighborhood noise.

Proposal 3 : Lack of wearing traditional cloth (the younger generation) in urban city

Background Research
Traditional clothes can still be seen worn especially at official functions,However, in daily activity, wearing traditional clothes among teenagers appear to have declined since been replaced by wearing T-shirts and jeans that was allegedly more simple and comfortable.Young people prefer a simple dress shirt than traditional especially in large urban areas, this is because many felt that the working conditions that require rapid movement makes them choose to wear shirts and pants for easy moving from a traditional dress that restrict some movement.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Problem Identification
  • Leak of knowledge about traditional cloth.
  • Most of this generation think that  urban wear is more suitable for them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aim and Objective
  • to give some information to the young  generation about traditional cloth.
  • to show that wearing traditional cloth  is represent  the culture and  identity of person.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Idealization and Concept

  • idea 1 - making the interactive application & website that user can  get the infromation
  • idea 2- creating video and project the video (mapping) to some creative object/thing.

Proposal 2 : Noise Pollution in Urban

  Background Research

An important factor for the life quality in urban centers is related to the noise levels to which the population is submitted. Several factors interfere with the amount of noise pollution throughout the city. Among them, and as one of the most important, is the traffic noise.Noise pollution is a serious problem because it can disrupt the health of the population.
Some of example of noise pollution in the city :
  • Noise Pollution due to vehicles, such as the LRT and Commuter especially in Kuala Lumpur.
  • Factories, which operates mainly in crowded urban areas, pose a serious problem of noise.
  • The noise generated from highway traffic is one of the major sources of noise pollution.
  • Aircraft noise differs from road traffic noise in the sense that it is not continuous but intermittent.
  • Noise from construction sites is generally far worse than the noise originating from factories
  • Neighborhood Noise-It includes a variety of noise sources which disturb and annoy general public especially during festival
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Problem Identification
  • To awareness the sound pollution to  people that lives in urban area
  • How noisy the sound in everyday life in urban city
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aim and Objective
  • to alert people that noise pollution  can be dangerous to health
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Idealization and Concept
  • By using sound mixer ,user can play around and mix the sound(ambient sound of pollution) in one time.
  • Visual will appear according to the ambient sound chosen.
